Finance materials

Self-generated materials

Materials you yourself generate for your production can include anything from creating your own sound or video effects to making your own props and costumes.

The key thing about self generated materials would be that is cheaper.

For example, an example of self generated materials would Doctor Who's Darlek. The Darlek is something that the team of Doctor Who have created to star as a character within the programme.

Archive materials? Archive materials is old footage used in previous productions form various genres and mediums. Documentary filmmakers often use archive footage to build and authenticate their narratives. A recent example of a film which uses archive footage in Senna, a 2010 British documentary directed by Asif Kapadia, that depicts the life and death of the great Brazilian motor-racing champion.

Productions that have used archive footage are the following:

  • China rises (How china has advanced over years and England now can not compete with the level of evolution)
  • Evolution - What Darwin never knew (Footage is used by flashbacks to how life used to be and then sprung forward to show how much it has actually evolved)
  • DEF CON: The documentary (footage shows past events of def cons success and unique experiences)

Library material

Library material refers to material stored in libraries. There are also sound libraries. Sound libraries are wild tracks of non-dialogue sounds will usually be collated by the production company for use in future projects. Over many productions a whole library of sound will be built up. For example, a large company such as the BBC, has a vast library of different sounds that can be upgraded and reused.

Collections of different video effects are also known as action essentials. Action essentials may include anything from a landscape sunset to traffic on a busy road.

The BBC sound effects library is a library that consists of many different types of sounds that you can buy form the Cranford website. For example you can purchase 16 different car noises for the price of £9.95

Internet

The internet is one of the newest ways to get copyrighted sound and video effects for your production. Due to the internet being so vast, there can be hundreds of places to obtain sounds from and all of it is at the click of a button. A website that you can obtain free sounds would be:

www.freesound.org

You could use free sound to build up your own sound library by collating many sounds together or adding to them to make a whole knew feel to the sound. Also the sounds are of all different types of quality. MUST make sure that you check the quality of the sound before you decide to use it because it could make the quality of the overall production that you use them in quite low.

Property rights and copyrights

If you ask for permission to use sounds created by companies then you should be prepared to pay for it due the company doing the hard bit of obtaining the sound. Foley artist decides what sound is going to create maximum effect for the scene. They mainly would receive appropriate remuneration for the their work that is created.
